A simple search with the word "What is anime" would have answered your question. It is a form of japanese animation. Here is a little paragraph I found on the search.

A term used to describe a style of Japanese animation (cartoon or otherwise) where people are drawn with big doe-eyes. There's also usually at least one of the following large human-controlled anthropomorphic robots; big space ships; ninja, samurai, or other martial arts; demonic entities that spurt tentacles and do really lascivious things with them; people with psychic abilities; cyborgs; or mysticism. The animation is highly stylized, and visuals are often very sharp and glossy. If you're familiar with Akira, Sailor Moon, Star Blazers, or Macross, then you know what we're talking about.

The majority of anime is much more mature than what you'd usually see by American art and cartoons. (Akira, GITS, etc)

It's a form of entertianment, for all ages.

But seriously, comparing it to American animation is just stupid if you ask me. Anime is so much more deeper, and the detail put into it easily transends that of regular animation.

In short, Anime freaking rocks.

Most Anime are highly detailed japenese "cartoons". Anime's are shows like Hellsing, Neo Gennisis Evengelion, Ruroni Kenshin, FLCL, Dead leaves, Dot hack//sign, Akira, Trigun, Cowboy beebop, Inuyasha (gay), Wing Gundom, Naruto, Bleach ect.

Anime is frggin' awesome!
